Valve Releases Three New ‘Half-Life: Alyx’ Gameplay Videos
Valve has released three new gameplay videos that show you how you will move and fight in Half-Life: Alyx VR game set to be released in just under three weeks.
Valve’s long-awaited Half-Life: Alyx game is set to debut in exactly 20 days on March 23rd. In the run up to the release, Valve has released three new gameplay videos that offer a little more detail on how the game will be played. The three videos last 10 minutes in total and they showcase the combat and the puzzles in Half-Life: Alyx along with the overall vibe of the game.
Included in the videos are some of the stuff that we already know about the game like the semi-realistic gunfights including the ability to manually reload as you are mobbed by the enemies. The videos also showcase many of the hand-based interactions. For example, you will see Alyx Vance tipping over the buckets as she searches for items, grabbing grenades from midair or pulling off a barred door. You will also see her flipping a dead headcrab using the tip of her pistol. According to Valve, the Index controllers will offer players extra interaction options although this detail is not provided in the gameplay videos released today.
The videos also show that Alyx Vance won’t be a silent protagonist like the theoretical physicist Gordon Freeman in the previous Half-Life series. In Half-Life 2, Alyx Vance did a one-sided banter. However, in Alyx, she is a playable character that can chat with the other characters and even muse with herself, occasionally.
Half-Life: Alyx also features some of the VR and shooter mechanics that many enthusiastic gamers would be more familiar with. Players can, for example, shift between teleportation-style locomotion and free directional movement. With the former, the player is able to strategically pop behind enemies or even cover during fights. Players can even collect an upgrade material known as “resin” and add some new features to their guns. This adds new levels of customization that was previously unheard of in Half-Life.
The three gameplay videos released mainly showcase some of the more familiar elements of the Half-Life universe. For example, there are the classic enemies such as the Combine soldiers, barnacles and headcrabs. The gameplay videos have also confirmed that Alyx will still have the old school Half-Life health stations as well as medkits offering hints of these being explained in the game’s fiction. This is logical as Half-Life: Alyx happens before Half-Life 2 and the sequel episodes. Valve also suggested that this might help in resolving some of the lingering mysteries from those earlier games.
Half-Life: Alyx will be a VR-exclusive although it will be playable on just about any PC-based headset. If you are just getting into VR in order to lay your hands on Alyx, you currently have limited hardware options. Valve Index is attempting to restock before the release of the game in three weeks’ time while many of the mid-range premium VR headsets have all been backordered. Delays have also been occasioned by the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis in China which has heavily affected production schedules. Check out our list of some of the VR hardware that you can purchase for Half-Life: Alyx.
