Vertigo Games Acquires Arcade Software Company SpringboardVR
The developer and publisher behind Arizona Sunshine and A Fisherman’s Tale Vertigo Games has acquired the VR arcade software company, SpringboardVR.
The two companies did not reveal the value of the sale.
SpringboardVR has been operating a subscription-based management platform for virtual reality arcades over the past few years. Its software enables users to select from a range of officially licensed titles. The SpringboardVR platform enables arcade owners to set the length over which a customer can use the platform along with other aspects of the arcade experience.
The subscription-based SpringboardVR platform costs $30 per month but there are discounts for the multiple stations within an arcade.
A press release following the acquisition confirmed that the service will keep running under Vertigo’s ownership and that several team members had also joined the company. Vertigo Games also has an arcade business where it distributes the arcade version of Arizona Sunshine along with a number of unique games such as Ghost Patrol VR and Corsair’s Curse.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the VR arcade business was one of the fastest growing in the industry but it has been ravaged over the past year with most of the locations remaining closed for almost the whole year. Vertigo Games has continued to support the arcade sector and even provided relief packages in the course of 2020. With vaccines being rolled out across the globe, it remains to be seen whether the arcades will reopen any time soon to give this sector a fresh lease of life.
Meanwhile, the other SpringboardVR founders have moved on to establish a new company, ArborXR, which provides software for streamlining VR and AR use-cases.
