VR Architecture Design and Collaboration Platform ‘The Wild’ Releases Quest Support
Virtual reality enterprise applications are central to the growth of the technology. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the VR collaboration tools that are springing up to meet various enterprises user needs. The Wild, a VR collaboration platform for architecture and design teams, is one such application and it has today launched on Oculus Quest, allowing users on the new and widely popular standalone VR headset to access the platform.
The addition of Oculus support to The Wild will radically cut down on the complexity of virtual reality collaboration. The Oculus Quest app speeds and simplifies the immersion of the whole design team into The Wild app thanks to the elimination of the technical barriers. The new found simplicity with the Quest app will also help shift virtual reality collaboration away from the conference rooms into the more convenient workstations. Having a virtual reality headset at every desk helps in realizing very transformative collaboration that helps enterprises in achieving excellence as well as alignment across the entire team.
The app is not publicly available even though it has been hosted on the Official Oculus Quest store as the access has been limited to the “qualified architecture and design teams”. Those interested in using it can sign up on The Wild website upon which they will be provided with a key that they can subsequently redeem in the Oculus app.
Teams located anywhere in the world will be able to experience their work at human scale using The Wild. This will allow organizations to reap the full benefits of a collaborative approach such as quick decision-making, better error detection as well as the platform to offer more valuable contexts to both clients and stakeholders. With the added support for the standalone Oculus Quest headset, designers will now be able to virtually collaborate on their projects without having to sit next to their PCs to visualize their work or tuck themselves at some quiet corner in their offices. They will also be able to carry their devices and take it to their customers.
The Wild tool enables up to 8 people to meet up within a fully synchronized virtual space and there is cross-platform support across virtual reality, augmented reality on iOS as well as on macOS and desktop PC. The software offers some valuable tools for both architects and designers including native sketching and annotation tools. The Wild is also compatible with most types of 3D files and will integrate easily with some of the leading industry-standard tools such as SketchUp, Revit along with other 3D workflows.
While the standalone Oculus Quest headset offers significantly less power than the high-end PC-based virtual reality headsets such as the Rift and Rift S, there are plenty of advantages and practical usage scenarios that will accrue from using a standalone device. It will be ideal for the smaller and more optimized files, those that you would not on use on the PC-based version of the software. It is recommended that you begin with the smaller sections of scenes and then add more so that you can determine the limits of the Quest headset for The Wild support.
Given the performance limitations of the standalone headset, of course usage comes with these caveats. As a result, the Quest app may only be applicable as a simple viewer for The Wild rather than a fully-fledged alternative to the PC-based version of software.
The Oculus Quest headset has now been around in the market for roughly two months and has so far been quite popular with many VR enthusiasts, selling out in most retail outlets within two weeks of its launch. It retails at $399 for the 64GB model. According to data by the analyst firm SuperData, the Quest headset has so far sold more than 1 million units.
