Warner Bros. SCOOB! Trailer The First To Come Embedded With YouTube AR Experience
Snap a pose next to an augmented Scooby-Doo directly from your YouTube mobile app.
Yesterday, Warner Bros. Pictures released the first global trailer for its interestingly-titled Scooby-doo reboot, SCOOB!. Opening in theaters next Summer, the 3D animated film will explore the mysterious origins of Shaggy and Scooby-Doo’s epic friendship and the creation of Mystery Inc. Along with being the first full-length animated Scooby-Doo film released on the big screen — shout-out to 2002’s live-action Scooby-Doo — SCOOB! is also the first film trailer to receive a set of AR filters embedded directly into the experience.
Available free on up-to-date iOS and Android devices, those who select the trailer via the app will now be greeted to a “Launch Camera” option located directly below the video. Upon activating this feature and allowing access to your smart devices camera, the app then opens a built-in AR selfie experience that allows you to snap photos alongside a 3D animated Scooby-Doo without even having to pause the trailer.
Three different animated poses are available as part of the AR promo. The first two options are relatively similar, putting a digital Scoob towards the side of the frame, allowing you to pose side-by-side with the famous canine. The third — and cutest — option plants the pupper right on top of your head like the world’s most adorable hat. While the first two options appear to be basic 3D overlays, this third option tracks the position of your head, keeping Scooby-Doo mounted comfortably on your noggin at all times.
YouTube first introduced its AR advertisements this past summer as part of its AR Beauty Try-On program which allowed users to sample real-life makeup products alongside their favorite YouTube beauty influencers in augmented reality. This was followed by the release of its Swirl mobile web-based immersive display format and subsequently a 3D editor for the company’s Google Poly platform, offering brands a new selection of tools and resources for developing their web-based immersive experiences.
Other interesting AR-focused projects have included Drawalong VR, an art tutorial program that allows users to project AR renditions of YouTube art tutorials over a real-world sketchpad, as well as AR face-filters for YouTube Stories.
SCOOB! arrives in theaters May 15th, 2020 and stars Zac Efron (High School Musical, Neighbors) as Fred, Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth, SNL) as Shaggy, Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin, Annihilation) as Velma, Amanda Seyfried (the Mamma Mia! Films, Ted 2) as Daphne, and Fred Wilkins (the Transformers franchise) as Scooby-Doo.
